Live6 Placemaking Design Guidelines

JIMA Studio, in partnership with Detroit Collaborative Design Center (DCDC), worked with the Live6 Alliance to produce a number of placemaking configurations to elevate the 6 Mile/McNichols area and increase footfall. In an effort to attract more visitors and businesses to the area, while managing street safety concerns, these placemaking recommendations focused on strategically locating furniture, decorative crosswalks and wayfinding signage to create a more attractive and functional Main Street.

Another final deliverable included a one-pager guide to help businesses owners connect to city resources on how to best activate their storefronts, for a unified presence along McNichols Road. The entire process was linked together with one-on-one interviews with business owners, neighborhood walks, hands-on workshops and a block party.

Corridor map annotation helps the team understand the strengths and weaknesses of the corridor to support the proposed recommendations.

Many business owners felt that the streetscape improvements help to slow down traffic but don’t encourage drivers to park and explore. Placemaking and street activation may help communicate that these businesses are open for patronage.
