Braden Street Pocket Park

Detroit, MI

JIMA was selected to facilitate the transition of a concept plan from a previous phase into a community amenity as part of a larger open space strategy to connect the Chadsey Condon neighborhood to other existing greenways and regional parks. JIMA led the planting design, site material and furniture selection, as well as the construction administration to bring this pocket park to life. This space is one of many initiatives sponsored by Bridging Communities in a long-range effort to activate and reuse vacant properties within the area. With a limited design and construction budget, JIMA worked with local vendors to provide the best quality products with the resources provided (under $50,000 all in).

As a place of respite, the planting plan uses native flowering perennials and evergreens to fill in the site’s understory with a lush background. The existing tree canopy remains to provide shade and minimize unnecessary demolition. The stone path supports wheelchair accessibility and offers clarity on pedestrian zones. The metal edging minimizes maintenance within the path areas, and the customized tables and chairs offer comfortable places to sit and gather. Architectural Salvage Warehouse used recycled gym flooring from the school next door to make the custom chess table and benches.
