The Higginbotham School is a historic building in the 8-Mile/ Wyoming subdivided neighborhood in Northwest Detroit. The neighborhood has a rich history of music and civil rights, as nearby is the infamous Birwood Wall, a physical barrier that separated Black and White residents in the area. Today, the neighborhood remains active and tightknit and the school is envisioned as a conversation to affordable multifamily housing. Working with McIntosh Poris Associates and Dokes Design Architecture, the landscape focuses on creating a mix of uses for both building tenants and residents as two additional apartment structures will be added to anchor the school site. The landscape offers peaceful walks, native and pollinator gardens, tot lots and bioswales. The Higginbotham School building will be flanked by two courtyards, one that is more public facing along Chippewa, and an interior courtyard for more intimate moments.
