JIMA, in partnership with BlackSpace, worked with the Red Hook Initiative to reimagine the existing urban farm at the NYCHA Red Hook Houses to incorporate robust agricultural production as well as additional spaces for gathering, training and hands-on learning. The design approach reflects key BlackSpace principles around the creation and preservation of culturally-Black spaces by elevating historic design motifs. The proposed design features a semi-circlepattern that reflects a quality of enclosure and intimacy, with perennial gardens as new “welcomes” and borders to the site. The site helps to support the existing production needs of the farm employees and community volunteers while creating more intimate spaces for reflection and relationship.
